Coffee Cup

The next story in Let's Meet in a Dream is a short one, "Coffee Cup".
Maybe it is the simplicity of it that makes it so believable. That, and the fact that as a guy I can admit that after I get some food in me all is right with the world.

Coffee Cup - Haruki Murakami

The most lonesome moment in a man’s life may be in that hour right after he sends his girlfriend home in a taxi.
A bit of her warmth lingers in the bed, her half cup of coffee remains on the table. That feeling, its simply like sitting in the trough at the bottom of a fishbowl after the water has been drained out. You read a book, you listen to music, and still your mind is a blank field, nothing sticks--no, nothing enters.
But anyway, being a little hungry, you mix some rice and yellow beans to eat, you might even add an egg. Right! There’s still a tail end of a daikon left over, might as well make some daikon soup. You always need to add a bit of dried fish, and you simply cannot forget the Fukushin pickles. Yeah. And there’s still a little left of the laver I got as a gift for Ghost Festival... That’s it.
After finishing it all, that dull feeling is already blown away like a fog. It really is amazing.
